ENGLAND STAR JONNY BAIRSTOW GETS ON RED TO JOIN MELBOURNE RENEGADES
Melbourne Renegades have secured one of world cricket’s most decorated white-ball players, with England star Jonny Bairstow joining the club for BBL|16.
A two-time World Cup winner and 100-Test veteran, Bairstow will add significant international experience to the Renegades’ batting line-up this summer, while also taking the gloves.
One of the leading white-ball batters of his generation, Bairstow has represented England in more than 180 limited-overs internationals, scoring 11 ODI centuries and establishing himself as one of the game’s most damaging opening batters.
The Yorkshireman said he was looking forward to returning to Australia – this time with the home crowd behind him.
“I’ve always loved playing in Australia. The crowds are passionate and I’ve always enjoyed that side of the contest,” Bairstow said.
“I’m really excited about joining the Renegades. Having the MCG as our home ground is pretty special and I’m looking forward to getting out there, playing the way I play and hopefully entertaining the fans.
“I know there’s been a bit of history over the years and I’m sure I’ll hear plenty about it when I get over there. That’s part of the fun of it.”
Melbourne Renegades Head Coach Luke Ronchi said Bairstow’s experience and attacking style would be a significant addition to the squad.
“Jonny has been one of the most damaging white-ball batters in world cricket for a long period of time and we’re delighted to have him joining us,” Ronchi said.
“But just as importantly, he plays the game in a way that we want to play. He’s aggressive, he puts pressure back on the opposition and he’s capable of changing a game very quickly.
“We’re building a squad that we believe can play an exciting and aggressive brand of cricket and Jonny is a great fit for that.”
Bairstow has scored 3,868 runs from 107 ODIs for England, including 11 centuries, at a strike rate above 100. He has also represented his country in 80 T20 internationals, alongside his 100-Test career.
Bairstow will be available for the full season, which starts when the Renegades take on the Scorchers in Chennai on December 12.
