Shaukat Khanum Hosts Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event in Melbourne with Dignitaries and Community Leaders

Melbourne, October 12, 2025 — In a powerful display of unity, education, and hope, the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) held its Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event in Melbourne today. The event brought together medical professionals, community leaders, political dignitaries, and supporters from across the city to raise awareness and support the fight against breast cancer.

This year’s event was graced by the presence of SKMCH&RC hospital directors Dr. Aila, Dr. Yasmin, and Mr. Kamran Mangi, who travelled to Melbourne to engage with the community and highlight the hospital’s life-saving work. In their addresses, they underscored the critical importance of early detection, advances in breast cancer treatment, and the hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing accessible cancer care in Pakistan.

The event also saw the participation of Australian dignitaries, including Hon. Kathleen Mathewward, MP and Hon. Bronwyn Halpenny, MP, both of whom expressed admiration for the hospital’s global impact and reaffirmed the importance of international cooperation in healthcare and cancer research.dr Aysha Saqib ( Oncologist) said I have seen first-hand the challenges patients face when diagnosed with breast cancer. But I’ve also seen the power of early detection, timely treatment, and the incredible strength of women who fight this battle with courage.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide – but it is not a death sentence, especially when detected early. This is why awareness is critical. Knowledge saves lives.

I urge every woman here — and those listening — to perform regular self-examinations, be aware of changes in their bodies, and not delay medical check-ups. If you’re over 40, please talk to your doctor about regular mammograms.

Let’s break the stigma. Let’s talk about breast health openly. Let’s support one another, and make sure no woman fights alone.

Together, through awareness, education, and compassion, we can fight breast cancer — and we can win.
Adding to the cultural vibrancy of the day, attendees enjoyed traditional Pakistani cuisine and chai, creating a warm and inclusive environment. A live musical performance added an uplifting tone to the event, celebrating the strength and resilience of those affected by cancer.

A central focus of the day was a breast cancer awareness and support SKMCH&RC’s mission of providing free or subsidized treatment to underprivileged cancer patients. Organizers reported strong community engagement and generous contributions, marking the event as one of the most successful to date.

Held annually in October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Melbourne event continues to grow in scale and impact, playing a crucial role in spreading awareness, reducing stigma, and fostering solidarity across continents.

As Dr. Aila noted in her closing remarks, “This event is not just about awareness; it’s about action, compassion, and community. Together, we are saving lives.”
